About Us About Us

Simon Corbyn and Les Newell have been working together since 1980. In 1989 they begun a business partnership and formed Corwell - the unique name that was combination of part of both their surnames.

At the start of both their careers both Simon and Les attended The London College of Furniture and achieved distinctions in their City and Guilds handmade furniture qualifications. This combined with many years working for a reproduction furniture company and then later with a small antique furniture restoration company gave Simon and Les a wealth of knowledge and skill in the art of Cabinet making and Antique furniture restoration.

So as a natural progression and a desire to create wonderful furniture they started Corwell.

Since then the business has slowly grown to a point where we have a team of cabinet makers that have all studied at college and had full training to become fully qualified and excellent craftsmen.

We work for many different types of clients that include the domestic market, interior designers, architects, business and corporate clients all of whom have different requirements and specifications.

We are experienced furniture makers in Reading, Berkshire, UK that specialise in making quality hand made furniture to your exact requirements. Every commissioned piece of furniture is carefully designed, constructed and finished to suit your individual needs. We hand select every piece of timber, purchase top quality fittings and show as much detail and care to every item of furniture whether it is a coffee table, breakfront bookcase or four-poster bed.

The beauty of having it made to order, is that it can fit just where you want it, match the colour, style and compliment your existing furniture. Or we can produce a complete room setting for you.

After an initial consultation with you, we work out an approximate cost for the item, and then produce a scaled drawing. From this and after any alterations we would craft your individual piece.

We use various types and species of timber, which include locally grown English Oak, Ash, Sweet Chestnut, Elm, Cherry, Maple, Walnut, Yew and Mahogany among others. We use almost every scrap of wood possible and never waste such a valuable resource. Even the smallest of off-cuts are used to heat the workshop. We do believe in using sustainable timbers and purchase wood from like-minded timber merchants as well as planting trees in our local village.

We are also very passionate about Buying British and supporting the British manufacturing industry. Since we have started, we have always tried to source from UK manufacturers which sadly have declined in recent years so we have expanded our search and supplier base to Europe. But we do not and would not import and furniture from outside our neighbouring countries.

When buying chairs from us you can be sure that they will be of a high quality and are well made, both supplied chairs and our own workshop produced chairs. For more information on our chair making service please look at our Bespoke furniture - Chairs section
